Finicky Finches Need Fresh Nyjer

Finch feeding on Nyjer seed

Nyjer®, often called thistle, is one of the best foods for attracting finches. Its small size and naturally high oil content make it an excellent energy source for active birds, especially goldfinches, house finches, purple finches, pine siskins, and redpolls when they are in the area.

Finches can be surprisingly picky, and freshness matters more with Nyjer® than almost any other backyard bird food. Nyjer® has a thin shell and can dry out, lose its oils, or spoil faster than many other seeds. Once it becomes stale, finches may ignore a feeder that was popular just a few days earlier.

  • Attracts American Goldfinches, House Finches, Purple Finches, Pine Siskins, and other small finches
  • High oil content provides valuable energy for active birds
  • Works best in specially designed finch feeders with small ports or mesh
  • Less attractive to many larger birds because of the tiny seed size
  • A great choice for year-round feeding, especially during colder months and nesting season

Fresh Seed Makes the Difference

If finches are not visiting your feeder, the first thing to check is the seed. Finches may pass up old Nyjer® even when the feeder is clean and placed in a good location. Fresh seed should have a slight oily feel, a mild nutty smell, and a clean, dry appearance. If it smells musty, looks dusty, clumps together, or has been sitting in the feeder for weeks, it is probably time to replace it.

A common mistake is buying too much Nyjer® at once. Bigger bags may look like a better deal, but if the seed sits too long before being used, the birds may stop eating it. It is usually better to buy an amount your birds will finish within a few weeks.

How to Tell if Your Nyjer® May Not Be Fresh

  • Birds suddenly stop eating from a feeder they used regularly
  • Seed looks dull, gray, dusty, or dried out
  • Seed has a musty, sour, or stale smell
  • Seed clumps together or feels damp
  • Seed has been sitting in the feeder for more than three to four weeks
  • Seed has been stored in a hot garage, shed, or sunny location

Tips for Better Finch Feeding

  • Use a finch feeder designed for Nyjer®, such as a tube feeder with small ports or a mesh feeder
  • Start with a smaller amount of seed until the birds find the feeder
  • Replace uneaten Nyjer® every three to four weeks, sooner if it gets wet
  • Clean the feeder regularly to prevent clogs, mold, and spoiled seed buildup
  • Store seed in a cool, dry place in an airtight container
  • Avoid placing the feeder where rain can easily blow into the ports
  • Be patient. Finches may take a little time to discover a new feeder

When Nyjer® is fresh and offered in the right feeder, it can be one of the most reliable ways to attract bright, active finches to your yard. A clean feeder, fresh seed, and smart storage make all the difference.
